Winston Mano and Tarik Sabry win MeCCSA Edited Collection of the Year
Decolonising Approaches to Users and Audiences in the Global South, edited by CAMRI’s Professor Tarik Sabry and Professor Winston Mano with Professor Andrea Medrado of the University of Exeter, has won the Edited Collection of the Year Award at the MeCCSA Outstanding Achievement Awards 2026. The winners were announced during the MeCCSA Annual Conference, hosted by the University of Leicester from 2 to 4 September.
The judges described the book as a highly valuable and rigorous edited collection that is relevant to a wide range of media and cultural studies contexts. The editors, they wrote, have thoughtfully curated perspectives from a diverse set of contributors examining audience research across Africa, Asia, Latin America and the Middle East. Complemented by a substantive, in-depth introduction chapter, this work provides a methodological toolkit that makes a strong contribution to the decolonisation of audience research.
Published by Routledge, the collection asks what audience and user research looks like when its concepts and methods are not imported wholesale from the North Atlantic. Its contributors work across four continents, and the introduction sets out a shared methodological agenda rather than a survey of national cases.
Responding to the award, Mano said that being nominated was an achievement in itself, but that winning is truly humbling, and thanked his co-editors, the book’s contributors and Routledge. The collection has already been reviewed in the International Journal of Communication and in Confluence.
