Prof. Winston Mano was an invited speaker at the highly successful Africa’s Talking 2024 (AT24) Summit, held in Kampala, Uganda, from October 23-26. The summit brought together leading tech figures from across Africa, fostering insightful thought leadership on scaling tech on the continent.

Mano shared findings from the Mozilla Common Voice-funded Wezesha Nakabambe project, which he undertook alongside Professor L. Lusike Mukhongo from Western Michigan University, U.S.A.; Professor Masibo Lumala from Moi University, Kenya; and Professor Edwin Ataro from the Technical University of Kenya. The project focused on building technology with smallholder farmers in Western Kenya, as documented here. These findings contributed to discussions in hackathons and other vibrant sessions throughout the summit.

The AT24 Summit, established in 2010, supports developers and enterprises by integrating with telecommunications companies (telcos) and aggregators across Africa, providing a unified platform accessible to all. Africa’s Talking currently offers six APIs (SMS, USSD, Voice, Airtime, Payments, and IoT) and covers over 20 African countries, serving over 80,000 developers and 6,500 businesses.

The 2024 event featured 60 talks, a 4-day hackathon, three workshops, and three keynotes across seven tracks, attracting more than 1,000 attendees from Africa’s tech ecosystem. Africa’s Talking, alongside partners like Mozilla Common Voice, continues to empower developers and companies in Africa, driving innovation and building sustainable, Pan-African businesses.
