Sally Anne Gross to speak on music and recession for Brighter Sound

As part of a series  of inspirational talks uncovering the stories behind how people in the music industry have overcome their biggest challenges, Sally Anne Gross will deliver a lecture on Music and Recession for Brighter Sound on the 21st May.

During this online in-conversation, music industry practitioner and academic Sally-Anne Gross will discuss music creation as a labour of love and the impact of this on sustaining your business during an economic crisis.

As part of our work to address both the gender gap and the regional divide within the music industry, this session is aimed at:

  • Early and mid-career music industry professionals – this can range from independent self-leaders to employees of small, medium and large companies
  • Women and gender minorities
  • People based in or from the North of England

Session overview

Sally-Anne Gross has been an artist manager, A&R, label manager and business affairs consultant, currently working as an academic in music. Over the last 30 years she has worked in the industry through three major recessions.

In the recession of the 1990s she found herself established in the industry and a mother of four children, finding ways to work collaboratively and collectively with artists alongside supporting her family. She articulates music as “care work, involving love, community, communal and social activity that is about resistance to oppression, sustainability and sustaining ourselves”. She highlights XL Recordings’ strategy of producing just 6-8 albums per year and giving them real attention contrasted with the ephemeral nature of online content and argues that artists should treat what they issue with great care.

In conversation with Remi Harris MBE, Sally-Anne will discuss:

  • Her experiences of managing music businesses during the 1990-1991 economic crisis and how that may connect to 2020
  • The relevance of a feminist economic understanding of music making as “care work”
  • Feeding the greedy internet – why digital production can be temporary and why we should be mindful about what we produce and release

The discussion will be followed by an opportunity for you to ask questions.
