Andrea Medrado Elected Vice President of IAMCR

19 April 2024

In the recent elections for the International Association for Media and Communication Research (IAMCR) Executive Board, Andrea Medrado was elected as the new Vice President.

Medrado, a Senior Lecturer at the University of Westminster, received 312 votes, or 48% of the total, securing her position on the IAMCR Executive Board for the 2024-2028 term.  She was endorsed by numerous IAMCR members who praised her dedication, collaborative spirit, and commitment to social justice.

“Andrea is a well-respected academic who advocates for pluriversality and celebrates decolonial approaches to media studies. I fully endorse her for the Vice President position at IAMCR!” wrote one supporter.

As Vice President, Medrado will work alongside IAMCR President Daya Thussu, formally a colleague at Westminster, and the rest of the Executive Board to support and develop media and communication research worldwide. The association particularly encourages the participation of emerging scholars, women, and those from economically disadvantaged regions.

“I’m particularly grateful for the excellent work of the Election Committee and the Executive Board, ensuring that everything ran smoothly,” said outgoing IAMCR President Nico Carpentier. “Congratulations to those colleagues who were elected into the new EB and the new IC, and thanks to all of the candidates for standing for election.”

Medrado’s research focuses on digital media activism and artivism in the Global South, as well as participatory approaches to analyzing media. She has published extensively in leading academic journals and authored the 2023 book “Media Activism, Artivism and the Fight Against Marginalisation in the Global South.”

With her wealth of experience and dedication to IAMCR’s mission, Medrado is poised to play a crucial role in shaping the future of media and communication research on a global scale.
