Debbie Ball shares takeaways from the Digital Good Network Summer School
Last year, PhD Candidate Debbie Ball attended the official Summer School programme of the Digital Good Network, a research community focused on building a good digital society that is funded by the Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC, part of United Kingdom Research and Innovation, UKRI). The Summer School was held at the University of Sheffield in June 2023.
On the eve of her return to return to University of Sheffield for AoIR 2024, Ball penned a reflection on her experience for the Digital Good Network’s blog. In it, she speaks about how the three-day programme helped her to express herself as an early career digital media researcher and how she and her peers devised an Instagram Explore algorithmic auditing activity as part of her PhD research methodology.
“The biggest benefit of attending the Digital Good Network was to help me find the full confidence to talk about my PhD thesis in design features at University of Westminster in public…I can’t think of a better environment to learn how to do that than within the inspiring community of likeminded researchers I met at Digital Good Network, similarly pushing for good outcomes for society through their work.”
