Steven Barnett quoted in Swedish newspaper Dagens Nyheter
Prof Steven Barnett was recently quoted in the Dagens Nyheter, Sweden’s largest morning paper (350,000+ subscribers), in a piece reflecting on Prince Harry’s relationship with the UK press and his court cases.
“If you as a journalist hack into a voicemail once to expose a major corruption scandal, I think you could avoid prosecution in the UK, even though it’s illegal. The problem here is that these methods have been used on a massive scale to ‘fish’ for news,” Barnett told the paper. “My impression is that this culture still exists—they are just waiting to see what happens. The tabloids are still a powerful force in our society, and it’s not a force we should accept.”
He went on to suggest that last chance to get answers about what happened in this case may come next year in the case Harry, Elton John, and a few other people have brought against Daily Mail.
