4 April 2025

Nupur JaisinghaniWe congratulate Dr Nupur Jaisinghani on being awarded a PhD degree with a thesis titled “An audience and textual study of gender and caste politics in Indian literature”.

Reflecting on her achievements, Nupur shared: “Completing a PhD is a challenging and isolating process, but this has also been one of the most rewarding experiences I’ve had. It is an absolutely incredible and surreal feeling to have achieved this and I could not have done this without the support of my supervisor, Tarik”.

Prof Tarik Sabry, Director of Studies, praised Nupur’s study as “an original and critical contribution to our understanding of gender and race politics in contemporary India”.

The thesis was examined by Prof Dina Matar (Director of the Centre for Global Media and Communication at SOAS) and Dr Musab Iqbal (Lecturer in Media, Digital and Society, CAMRI).

Dr Iqbal praised Nupur’s work: “Nupur’s thesis is a very well-organized and structured study of the reception of Indian female writers among diasporic female audiences. The study is an interesting and original piece of work which helps us understand the gender question in the Indian context and how the audience’s own perception and consciousness of caste and gender shapes their reading of novels. This is an important intervention in exploring the question of gender from a caste perspective and how gender is represented and perceived by female writers and readers”.

We wish Nupur every success in her future professional endeavours!
