15 November 2024

CAMRI’s Winston Mano travelled to Beijing to celebrate the 70th anniversary of the Communication University of China (CUC) (1954–2024). As part of the commemorations, he was a featured speaker at events hosted by CUC’s Joint Institute of International Communication Research and the Institute for a Community with Shared Future, from September 25–29.

Mano spoke on the evolving role of academic journals in media and communication studies on the 25th September. In the meeting with academic journal editors, Mano discussed the Journal of African Media Studies (link). After hearing from other speakers, he shared insights into the challenges and opportunities facing his journal, including the impact of AI, the importance of research rigor, and sustainability concerns. He shared the platform with distinguished colleagues from the IAMCR, including Professor Daya Thussu (Editor of Global Media and Communication), Professor Karen Arriaza Ibarra, and Simone Natale, Co-Editor of Media, Culture & Society.

Mano also participated in a panel organized by CUC’s International Academic Forum on Artificial Intelligence and Higher Education, held on September 26. He talked about the potential and limitations of AI in Africa, arguing that policy changes are urgently needed. Both the journals dialogue and AI Forum were organized by Professor Ji Deqiang, Editor of Global Media and China (GMAC), and his colleagues at CUC.

Additionally, Mano took part in the annual meetings of the think tanks for the Institute for a Community with a Shared Future (ICFS 2024), organized by CUC’s Professor Li Huailiang, Dean of the Institute, and Professor Zhang Yanqiu, Deputy Dean.
