A recent article from Bloomberg highlighted how the UK Government’s response to Coronavirus has been blunted by missed targets and moving goalposts. The article, by Joe Mayes, focused on the gaps between PM Johnson’s statements and the realities seen by people and NHS staff. This gulf, the article suggests, has hurt the British government throughout its response to the pandemic, concluding that official optimism has contrasted starkly with under-delivery.

In the article Prof. Steven Barnett points to the danger of Johnson losing people’s faith in the government’s pledges. He makes clear that for the government, “There’s no point in chasing good headlines, because there will be pain down the road.”

The full article can be read on the Bloomberg website.
