Winston Mano Participates in the 74th ICA Conference in Australia
Prof. Winston Mano co-organized a pre-conference and delivered two presentations at the 2024 International Communication Association (ICA) conference, held on Australia’s Gold Coast from June 20–24. The pre-conference, titled “Whose News is It? Assessing the Role and Influence of International Media Assistance in Defining the News Agenda,” took place on Thursday, June 20. It was co-organized by Dr. Susan Abbott (CAMRI, University of Westminster), Professor Chris Patterson (University of Leeds), Professor viola milton (University of South Africa), Dr. Dani Madrid-Morales (University of Sheffield), Professor Herman Wasserman (Stellenbosch University), Saba Badawi (University of Technology Sydney), Professor Mel Bunce (City, University of London), and Pablo Morales (London School of Economics).
The pre-conference explored the role, nature, and impact of international media assistance on the global news agenda, facilitating an exchange of research that highlights the complexities of foreign media funding from an interdisciplinary perspective. Mano’s presentation at the pre-conference, titled “Narratives from Donors for News Media in Africa: Preliminary Findings,” shared insights into donor-driven narratives influencing African media.
Additionally, Mano presented with Professor viola milton on “Epistemic Struggles in Decolonial African Contexts” in the Philosophy Section of the main conference. The ICA is the premier global academic association for scholars dedicated to the study, teaching, and application of communication across all domains.
