Winston Mano Speaks at Leeds Symposium on Popular Public Service Broadcasting

Earlier this year, on 11 September, Prof. Winston Mano presented a paper on popular radio in Zimbabwe at the Popular Public Service Broadcasting symposium. The symposium explored BBC Radio 2 listening trends, popular music culture, and the role of radio as a popular public service medium.
Other speakers included Dr. Neil Washbourne and Dr. Lee Broughton from Leeds University, who jointly discussed BBC Radio 2 listening; Dr. Paul Smith of De Montfort University, who examined Public Service Media, sport, and cultural citizenship in the streaming era; and Dr. Dan Martin, who addressed Public Service Media in the platform age. The keynote address was delivered by Prof. Kate Lacey, who argued for public service broadcasting not by prescribing specific content or platforms but by emphasizing the ethical and civic duties of engaged audiences.
The symposium was organized by Dr. Neil Washbourne and provided a dynamic forum for discussing the evolving roles and responsibilities of public service broadcasting.
