Carl Jones and Rigoberta Menchú speak at Educational Conference for UNOi

 

On February 28th Dr. Carl W. Jones spoke to 500 private school owners on El Otro y Yo  (Me and The Other) for UNOi, one of the largest educational software companies in Latin .

The three-day conference February 28-May 2nd united six speakers, including 1992 Nobel Peace Prize winner Dr. Rigoberta Menchú;  Irish/Colombian singer Kaitie James; and Shannon Lee (actor Bruce Lee’s daughter) among others, to talk about “The Other” as it relates to different themes such as climate and race. Carl spoke about his recent PhD research and explained how communication can reinforce colonial thinking such as race and class, creating ‘the other’ out of people of colour.

The yearly conference united 500 private school owners from across Mexico and South America, and Tulum Mexico was selected as this year’s conference location.

Dr. Carl W. Jones teaches Digital Media at the Westminster School of Media and Communication, and his research focuses on Diversity in Advertising. Carl will be speaking as part of a panel on Thursday May 22nd, at the 50 years of Media at Westminster: Histories, Presents and Futures of Media and Communication CAMRI conference.
