Doug Specht and Gunter Saunders address how AI is transforming universities on UN podcast

In the latest episode of the AI and Sustainability podcast series, Doug Specht joined the discussion to explore how artificial intelligence is reshaping the way universities operate. Speaking alongside Gunter Saunders, Director of Digital Capability Development and AI Leadership, Specht reflected on both the opportunities and the ethical challenges that AI presents within higher education.

The AI and Sustainability podcast series is produced by United Nations University (UNU) and UNESCO IESALC. The series brings together global experts to discuss how artificial intelligence is transforming higher education and contributing to (or complicating) progress toward the Sustainable Development Goals.

Drawing on their expertise in digital media and education, Specht and Saunders highlighted how AI tools are being used to streamline administrative processes, support student learning, and enhance data-driven decision-making. Yet, they also acknowledged important questions around equity, transparency, and the role of educators in an increasingly automated environment.

This conversation underscored the need for universities to strike a careful balance between embracing AI’s efficiencies AI while safeguarding the human and ethical dimensions of education.
