If we believe that the internet is constituted by soical forces and social actors, what does it mean to have a state-led digitization? In this talk, Yu Hong combines political economy overview with case studies from county-level contexts to flesh out an updated understandng of China’s digitization.

Biography

Yu Hong is a Professor of Communication at the College of Media and International Culture, Zhejiang University. With a PhD in Communication from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, she has written about ICT4D, internet and media policy, and shifting global communication order. Her recent projects include China’s Globalizing Internet (Routledge, 2023) and a forthcoming Chinese-language monograph on re-narrating global digital China.
