Launch of The Public Service Media and Public Service Internet Manifesto @ Online

This event launches “The Public Service Media and Public Service Internet Manifesto”.

The Internet and the media landscape are broken. The dominant commercial Internet platforms endanger democracy. The Manifesto stresses the importance of PSM and the creation of a public service Internet for the future of society and safeguarding democracy.

In the online event, PSM experts will talk about why they support and signed the Manifesto that is the outcome of a discussion and collaboration process organised as part of the AHRC research network InnoPSM: Innovation in Public Service Media Policies.

The event takes place on Zoom. After registering on Eventbrite, you will receive the Zoom access data at latest one day in advance of the event.

With interventions by Alessandro D’Arma, Roy Cobby Avaria, Leonhard Dobusch, Christian Fuchs, Minna Horowitz, Luciana Musello, Jack L. Qiu, Barbara Thomaß.

The audience of the event will have the opportunity to be among the first to read and sign the Public Service Media and Public Service Internet Manifesto.


About the participants

Alessandro D’Arma is Reader in Media and Communication at the University of Westminster and principal investigator of the AHRC Research Network: InnoPSM – Innovation in Public Service Media Policies.

Roy Cobby Avaria is a research student and PhD candidate at King’s College London’s Department of Digital Humanities. He works on digital platforms in and the structural transformation of the Global South.

Leonhard Dobusch is Professor of Business Administration with a Focus on Organization at the University of Innsbruck in Austria. He is a member of ZDF Fernsehrat (Television Council of ZDF [Second German Television]).

Christian Fuchs is Professor of Media and Communication Studies with a focus on digital media at the University of Westminster, where he is the director of the Communication and Media Research Institute.

Minna Horowitz is Docent Professor at the University of Helsinki, Expert at Central European University’s Center for Media, Data & Society, and curator of the Global PSM Experts Network. She is co-investigator of the InnoPSM research network.

Luciana Musello is a Lecturer in Media and Communications at Universidad San Francisco de Quito in Ecuador. Her research interests include the political economy of the Internet, social media and labour. She is also an art director and communications consultant.

Jack L. Qiu is Professor and Research Director at the National University of Singapore’s Department of Communications and New Media, where he works on digital media and social change.

Barbara Thomaß is Professor for the International Comparison of Media Systems at Ruhr-University Bochum’s Institute for Media Studies. She is a member and Second Deputy Chair of ZDF Verwaltungsrat (ZDF [Second German Television] Board of Directors).

Klaus Unterberger is the Head of ORF Public Value, the Austrian Broadcasting Corporation (ORF)’s competence centre for the analysis and advancement of public service media’s public value.
