Paul Rekret presents public lecture at the Museum of Modern Art, Warsaw

Paul Rekret presented his research on popular cultures in a public lecture at the Museum of Modern Art in Warsaw on 21 October 2025.
Drawing on his recent book Take This Hammer: Work, Song, Crisis (Goldsmiths Press/MIT Press, 2024), the talk explored how the organisation of sound, noise, and listening has shaped struggles over labour and everyday life.
Contrasting music’s rootedness in collective work and social experience with the abstraction and autonomy claimed by high art, Rekret traced a trajectory from nineteenth-century work songs through industrial and domestic soundscapes to the algorithmic regimes of contemporary streaming, showing how music both registers and resists the temporal discipline of work.
