Maria Michalis joins the Board of Trustees of the Voice of the Listener and the Viewer

Maria Michalis has joined the Board of Trustees of the Voice of the Listener and the Viewer (VLV). VLV, founded by Jocelyn Hay in 1983, has been a long standing and passionate advocate of citizens’ interests in broadcasting policy. It continues to campaign for excellence and diversity in UK broadcasting. Among others, it submits comments to policy consultations, holds meetings with policy makers, industry and other stakeholders, and organises public events.

Maria Michalis is Reader in Communication Policy at the University of Westminster. She has a background in political science and international relations and has a PhD in Communication Policy. Her research interests are in the field of communication policy and regulation. She is expert on European Union policy and has represented VLV in work with the European Alliance of Listeners’ and Viewers’ Associations (EURALVA) for a number of years. Her current research includes public service media; internet regulation; and the interplay between the technological convergence of television and telecommunications/internet, policy and business models. She was Secretary General (elect) of the International Association for Media and Communication Research between 2012 and 2016. She is currently working on the EU Horizon 2020 project netCommons: Network Infrastructure as Commons, http://netcommons.eu/.

She is author of Governing European Communications(Lexington, 2007) and numerous book chapters and academic articles in journals such as Media, Culture and Society; European Journal of Communication; International Journal of Media and Cultural Politics; Convergence: The Journal of Research into New Media Technologies; Review of International Political Economy; Gazette: The International Journal for Communication Studies and Telecommunications Policy.
