Jean Seaton speaks to the FT about Johnson and the appointment of Ofcom’s new chair

The appointment of the new chair of Ofcom has been making headlines for months, with numerous concerns being raised about the process and government interference. This week the Financial Times reported on Boris Johnson being accused of creating a new conflict of interest over the appointment of the Ofcom chair. The accusation follows the appointment of a lobbyist from public relations agency Hanover to help select the next chair of the UK’s industry regulator. Hanover advises media companies including Sky, Facebook, and outside the UK, Apple. In the article, which can be read in full on the FT website, Jean Seaton raised concerns about Hanover’s connections with Sky. “Sky has a direct interest in the BBC being smaller,” she said.
