Doug Specht appointed as Chartered Geographer

Doug Specht has been appointed as a Chartered Geographer by the Royal Geographical Society in recognition of his past and continuing contribution to the field of geography. Chartered Geographer (CGeog) is the only internationally recognised professional accreditation for those with competence, experience and professionalism in the use of geographical knowledge, understanding and skills in the workplace. He joins just over 700 Chartered Geographers, across the globe, whose specialisms range from GI Scientists, conservationists, planners, surveyors, environmental and economic consultants, civil servants, academics, teachers, military personnel and others.

Doug studied Geography at both undergraduate and postgraduate (PGCE) level at the College of St. Mark and St. John (now Plymouth Marjon University). His work moved towards understanding international connectivity and development, a subject he pursued at the University of Amsterdam, though an MSc. in International Development. Since joining the University of Westminster and the Communication and Media Research Institute, he has focused his research around the codification of subjugated knowledges through digital cartographic artefacts. As well as producing numerous research papers, he has also worked to provide expert accounts on geographic knowledge in international development though the production of reports on geographic information in the third sector for the AGI, and through his work with IST/36 where he sits on the GI in the UN Sustainable Development Goals Working Group.
