Why tech billionaires are buying American newsrooms: Steven Barnett interviewed for Yahoo News
Following last weeks purchase of Time Magazine by Marc Benioff, Yahoo News asks why wealthy tech entrepreneurs are so keen to take control of news outlets. The article, by Alanna Petroff, Senior Economics Correspondent at Yahoo Finance UK, charts the growing number of tech billionaires who are buying up traditional news agencies across America. These include Amazon founder Jeff Bezos’ purchase of The Washington Post and Laurene Powell Jobs – the widow of Apple founder Steve Jobs – taking a majority stake in The Atlantic, an American news magazine. In the article Prof. Steven Barnett suggests that there “seems to be a growing phenomenon of newly wealthy owners of big tech companies … for some reason they’re attracted to old-fashioned legacy media.”
