CAMRI appoints new professors

7 October 2023

CAMRI are delighted to announce the appointment of Professor Justin Schlosberg, who joins us in January from Birkbeck. Justin spent 11 years at Birkbeck, where he served as Assistant Dean for Film, Media and Cultural Studies and oversaw their very successful REF 2021 return which saw his department climb from #38 to #4 in UoA 32. He was Chair of the Media Reform Coalition for three years, a role which contributed to a REF 2021 impact case study built around his work. Justin’s current research is on digital platforms and disinformation. As well as his track records in academic leadership and research, he brings genuine commitment to EDI and to teaching, and his experience of integrating decolonial perspectives into that teaching.

Justin comments: ‘It’s a huge honour to join CAMRI, whose colleagues past and present I’ve long followed and also had the privilege of collaborating with at times. Hugely looking forward to both drawing and building on Westminster’s rich history and reputation for world-leading research and teaching, especially within media and related fields.’

CAMRI also send our congratulations to colleagues Roza Tsagarousianou, Winston Mano, and Miriyam Aouragh, who were all also promoted to professorships in 2023. They join Maria Michalis and Tarik Sabry, who were both promoted to professor in 2022.

This wonderful achievement of six new professors in 18 months is powerful evidence of the quality and significance of CAMRI colleagues’ work in research, teaching, and academic citizenship, and a clear signal of our commitment to ongoing leadership in our field. Look out for an exciting series of professorial inaugural lectures in 2024.
