A one day symposium at the Institute for Government, 2 Carlton Gardens, London SW1Y 5AA

Keynote speaker: Prof. Sir Adam Roberts, University of Oxford, President of the British Academy

Is the withdrawal of US troops from Afghanistan in 2014 an opportunity to foster regional cooperation and security? Can contentious issues like water and trade become unconventional methods to foster trust? What role can the media play in preserving human rights, which are at risk in conflict zones?

Conflict – of not just the violent kind – has affected close to 100 million lives in South Asia since 1947. The region continues to be in a state of disharmony and distrust. But there might be an opportunity hidden in this chaos that could bring a better tomorrow.

The Chevening South Asia Journalism Programme at the University of Westminster is holding a one-day symposium which will bring together leading thinkers to explore these issues and develop new insights into negotiating conflict in the dynamic environment of South Asia.

How to find Institute for Government

Please note that 2 Carlton Gardens is at the western end of Carlton House Terrace in a small square (circle). It should not be confused with 2 Carlton House Terrace, which you may come to first.

There are 3 stations that you can access 2 Carlton Gardens from. Piccadilly Circus, Green Park and Charing Cross.

Piccadilly Circus

Take the Lower Regent Street exit from the tube station. Make your way down Lower Regent Street passing a Tesco express, costa and Rymans on your right. Walk all the way down until you reach Pall Mall. Turn right into Pall Mall, then take your first left into Carlton Gardens, you need to walk to the end of this road and then turn right into Carlton House Terrace and walk to the end of the road. You will come upon a circle where our building is situated.

Green Park

When you come out of the tube station onto Piccadilly road, you need to walk in the direction of Piccadilly Circus. So if the M&S is on your left then you need to walk straight, if it is on your right, you need to turn and walk in the other direction. You will pass the Ritz Hotel on your right. Keep walking then turn right down St James Street. Walk all the way down and you will eventually follow the curve in the road to the left, keep walking and then turn right into Carlton Gardens, walk to the end of the road and then turn right into Carlton House Terrace. Keep walking until the end of this road and you will come upon a circle where our building is situated.

Charing Cross

When you come out of the tube station, make your way to Trafalgar Square and carry on walking down The Mall. You will pass a large set of stairs on your right, keep walking past this and then turn right up the second set of stairs that you come across. Our building is on the left as you come up the stairs.
